A long term, employee 7 years, claimed sick pay for back pain, produced a doctors note and was paid his entitlement. However it has come to my notice (whistle blower ) that the employee on sick was actually attending a 2 week long citb training course for a construction based trade. Obviously if true there was nothing wrong with his back. I have mentioned that this has been brought to my attention and that I would be investigating further.
He said that he attended out of hours and some weeks after he was off sick. I want to believe him but it just does not ring true. I contacted the training centre, obviously for reasons of date protection they could not confirm or deny if my employee had attended or not. However they did confirm that the qualification could not be gained without attending the full 2 weeks 8.00 till 4.00 course.
I told the employee what the training centre had said and he just laughed it off saying he had attended on an evening. I asked to see his certificate, He tells me it is dated but has not brought it in yet.
My worry is that unwittingly I have become implicated in a fraud. Any suggestions?
