Hi,
Unfortunately, due to major life stresses, the whole PPI claiming debacle sort of passed me by. I had too much going on and didn't really pay much attention to news stories & the like.
I have had a Capital One card for around 13 years and an Opus (formerly Citi) card for 12 years. I was under the impression that PPI was compulsory. Slightly horrified when I realised it was not compulsory, and exactly how much it costs. Dread to think how much I've paid out in PPI over the years.
Is it even worth claiming? I've tried researching the issue but am not sure if there is any likelihood of success. I've read something about PPI being much more difficult to claim if cards were taken out pre-2005. I read on another site that it can be difficult to prove that the box on an online application was pre-ticked. (I remember the Cap1 box was pre-ticked, not sure about Opus but I also remember being badgered on the phone by one of them about taking it, leaving me with the impression it wasn't an optional thing.) Trouble is I applied for the cards so long ago...
From reading a few threads on another forum, it seems I have to be able to provide solid proof that I did *not* request PPI, and also provide proof that I did not understand exactly what it was, the limits of its coverage, etc. I am still with the same employer, who provides sickness pay and death benefits, plus I have a family member who could have covered the cards if I'd been too ill to work for an extended period. I've also read that the ombudsman denies claims against Cap1 more often than not.
Is it even worth attempting to claim? Not sure if I should even start the process. The Opus card has no balance and I was going to cancel it (but if I proceed with a claim I'll keep it open with a balance of 0 for now). The Cap1 card does have a balance on it - if I attempted to claim, would they cancel it and demand payment?
I would appreciate any advice :-)
