Hi, I'm new to this site, so please bear with me if I've posted in wrong section etc.
Last week I was shopping in The Range in Eccles.
I wanted to purchase a Christmas jumper. I decided to try it on there & then, to save me driving back to return. There were no changing rooms so I found a long mirror on the coat section. I took off my cardi, scarf & bag and placed them in the shop pull basket. The jumper was too small, so I put my belongings back on and hung the jumper back up.
I then walked round a bit more and went to pay for my goods.
Once I was outside the store, the security guard, ( who looked like a young boy with a Range fleece on) asked me to come back into store as an eye witness had told him I had taken a scarf without paying.
I smiled and said I would go back in with him as it was my scarf and I had it on when I came into the store.
at that point I was vey calm, as I knew I hadn't done anything wrong.
I followed him down to the bottom of the store, he was asking various assistants did they know where Ann (the eyewitness) was.
when he found her, he said "is this the lady?" She replied, yes.
i saiid I hadn't taken the scarf, I didn't know you sold scarves. To which she smiled and I was stood right next to them. I said I've had it since last Christmas, look it has pulls etc on it? She said, that was going to be my next question, the condition of it. I started to get a little upset the, when it hit me I was actually being accused of shoplifting!
she then said "sorry about that, and walked away.
Nothing else was said, the security guard turned round and started to walk to the front of the store, I followed him. When we reached the door he simply said, sorry about that and walked back into store.
That's when I completely broke down. When I got to my car I was sobbing & shaking uncontrollably, I rang my partner who tried to calm me down, to no avail, there was way I could drive home in that state. Then I got mad and decided to call the store to speak to a manager.ma manager came to the phone, when I explained everything, she asked where I was and came to my car with a pack of tissues, ( the 'manager' was Ann the eye witness!)
she explained why she had done it, and is explained that I understood why, it was the way they had gone about it that had upset and infuriated me! In front of customers! I've worked in retail and if we suspected somebody was shoplifting we approached them and took them to a room to check CCTV etc. She said the only place they could have took me was through a door and near the stairs where staff were up and Dow, I said that would have been better as other customers wouldn't have been staring.
It was totally unprofessional! she said I was right and she was going to take the security guard to see the manager and explain they need to change the process, (so she wasn't the manager after all)
I emailed The Range customer service when I got home, if they don't email me back today, it will be 36 working hours-and no reply.
what else can I do?
So sorry if I have ranted, but I'm 52 years of age, and feel totally horrible and humiliated😥
