What is going on?

vendredi 19 décembre 2014

I have worked for the organisation for 20 years in a number of roles but currently head of ICT technical. I hold the most senior position in ICT. Recently a tablet device has gone missing....

It starts here: I was asked to return from a Leeds convention on 10 December ASAP to a 2:00pm meeting and could be represented by a friend or TU rep. The time was 12:37. I had attempted to ascertain the issue but my line-manager wouldn’t provide any further detail. Everything goes through your mind so I frantically called a peer who didn’t pick up and then a colleague who did but could only make it at 4:00pm. I rang my line manager back who agreed to 4:00pm but still wouldn’t provide any further detail. Meanwhile my peer had txt me to state he could not get involved and his line manager (we have the same) had been in touch.

I attended the 4:00pm meeting with my rep and my line manager, accompanied by a HR rep. I was asked if I knew about a missing device. Aside being relieved this was a small issue I told my line manager what I knew. ICT had recently ordered a device some 2 weeks since which had been sent to the wrong building and then internally routed (internal post) to the ICT building and put into the in-tray of ICT. Since then it had apparently disappeared and I had asked for a full search of the building to find. It isn’t unusual that a device goes missing and appears some days/weeks later. A few days had passed so I suggested we procure another and send one back when in receipt. The device is for a project so delaying finding it delayed any development of the project.

I was then shown a photo of a box at the side of my desk which was suggested to be the lost device. The way in which it was place was hidden from view (certainly mine) but not completely concealed. I was asked if I knew the location which I responded positively as it was my office (and I could see boxes I had placed ready to be made up).

I was mainly unconcerned. I was then shown 3 CCTV photos (4 Dec) of me leaving the building with a box – not the same as the device. I was then asked why I went to the rear of the building to leave and did I always carry a box. The answers are a) I park at the rear of the building in a public car-park and use this route 95% of times out the building for that very reason, b) no I don’t carry boxes but usually my laptop backpack – the reason now is because I was taking papers home and starting to file my office work (I have in charge of £20m programme of ICT works and wanted to clear up for 2015 – I’d bought the boxes some 3-4 weeks prior).

Following this I was suspended (I received a letter 4 working days later “possibly for theft”). I stated this was absurd and wholly inappropriate way to deal with this and that putting 2 + 2 in this case didn’t make 4, and that there are a good deal of permutations to this position.

So it goes. I attended an “informal” meeting yesterday lasting some 3 hours to discuss my view and a number of questions. I did take my rep again who suggested it was positive. I was honest and stated in all possible terms I do not steal and it is in my power and job to take any equipment for testing/eval anyway. The informal meeting presented no further evidence. I have been calm and controlled through but was naturally deflated.

The investigating officer is going to perform some interviews next week, though in summary I now understand someone in ICT has raised an issue and it had been acted upon. The facts are I have not moved, touched, or hidden any device nor taken it from the building.

I’ve research the internet – which is how I found this website – and scared my own pants off by finding ‘balance of probability’. There was a "device box" in my office (which by the way is open to c80 staff at all times) and was seen leaving with a box. What I can’t get my head around is why this has happened so quickly or that a senior mgr of 20 years can be treated this way?

I have no previous accusations and totally unblemished record in my career. I am paranoid - I think naturally - and have no wish to be sacked and then the inevitable appeal, constructive dismissal case!

Help?

Sorry for the length of this I am trying to provide all information/guess questions....

Any views gratefully received as naturally I’ve lost sleep and weight not eating!
